SUMIF

Math & Aggregationbeginner

SUMIF lets you total a column while filtering by a condition in another column. Instead of manually filtering and then summing, SUMIF does both in one step. It's one of the most-used formulas in any ops or finance role.

Syntax

Excel:=SUMIF(range, criteria, [sum_range])

Google Sheets: Same syntax

Parameters

rangeThe range of cells to evaluate against the criteria (e.g., the status column).

criteriaThe condition that determines which cells to sum (e.g., "Paid").

sum_range?The actual cells to add up. If omitted, sums the range itself.

? = optional parameter

Worked Example

You want to know how much the Engineering department has spent total.

Formula

=SUMIF(A2:A9, "Engineering", B2:B9)

Result

$37,600.00

SUMIF checks departments in A2 through A9. When a row equals 'Engineering', it adds the matching amount from B2 through B9, so it totals B2, B5, and B8.
