SUMIFS

Math & Aggregationintermediate

SUMIFS extends SUMIF by letting you apply two or more conditions at once. The syntax is slightly different from SUMIF — the sum range comes first, then each criteria range/criteria pair follows. This is one of the most powerful everyday formulas in ops and finance work.

Syntax

Excel:=SUMIFS(sum_range, criteria_range1, criteria1, [criteria_range2, criteria2], ...)

Google Sheets: Same syntax

Parameters

sum_rangeThe range to sum.

criteria_range1The first range to evaluate.

criteria1The condition for the first range.

criteria_range2, criteria2?Additional range/condition pairs.

? = optional parameter

How much has Engineering spent on Software specifically?

SUMIFS checks rows 2 through 7 for two conditions at the same time: department must be 'Engineering' and category must be 'Software'. Only rows 2 and 6 match, so it adds C2 and C6.
