SUM

Math & Aggregationbeginner

SUM is the most fundamental aggregation formula in Excel. It takes a range of cells (or multiple ranges) and returns the total. You'll use this constantly for totaling columns, creating subtotals, and building other calculations on top of.

Syntax

Excel:=SUM(number1, [number2], ...)

Google Sheets: Same syntax

Parameters

number1The first number, cell reference, or range to add.

number2?Additional numbers or ranges. Up to 255 arguments.

? = optional parameter

Worked Example

You want to know the total dollar amount across all invoices.

Formula

=SUM(C2:C7)

Result

$52,337.50

SUM adds the amount values in cells C2 through C7. In this visible sample, that gives you the total invoiced amount across rows 2 to 7.
