AVERAGEIF

Math & Aggregationbeginner

AVERAGEIF works like SUMIF but returns the average instead of the total. It only averages the values where the condition is met, ignoring all other rows. Useful for benchmarking and comparing performance across categories.

Syntax

Excel:=AVERAGEIF(range, criteria, [average_range])

Google Sheets: Same syntax

Parameters

rangeThe range to evaluate against the criteria.

criteriaThe condition that determines which cells to average.

average_range?The actual cells to average. If omitted, averages the range itself.

? = optional parameter

Worked Example

What's the average invoice amount for the Sales department?

Result

$3,033.33

AVERAGEIF looks at A2 through A7, keeps only the rows labeled 'Sales', and averages the matching amounts from B2 through B7. In this sample, it averages B2, B4, and B6.
