RANK

Statisticalintermediate

RANK tells you where a value stands relative to others in a range. Is this the 1st largest? 5th? 50th? It can rank in descending order (largest = 1) or ascending order (smallest = 1). Useful for leaderboards, performance rankings, and identifying top/bottom performers.

Syntax

Excel:=RANK(number, ref, [order])

Google Sheets: =RANK(number, ref, [order])

Parameters

numberThe value to rank.

refThe range of values to rank against.

order?0 or omitted = descending (largest is #1). 1 = ascending (smallest is #1).

? = optional parameter

Worked Example

Where does a $12,500 invoice rank among all invoice amounts?

Formula

=RANK(B2, B2:B2)

Result

RANK compares the amount in B2 against the visible range B2:B2. Because this sample only includes one amount, that invoice is ranked 1st.
