LARGE

Statisticalintermediate

LARGE returns the kth largest value in a dataset. LARGE(range, 1) is the same as MAX, LARGE(range, 2) is the second largest, and so on. Useful for top-N analyses without sorting the data.

Syntax

Excel:=LARGE(array, k)

Google Sheets: =LARGE(array, k)

Parameters

arrayThe range of values.

kThe position from the largest (1 = largest, 2 = second largest, etc.).

? = optional parameter

Worked Example

What's the 3rd largest invoice amount?

Formula

=LARGE(B2:B4, 3)

Result

$30,500.00

LARGE looks at the visible values in B2 through B4 and returns the 3rd largest one. In this sample, the 3rd largest value is $30,500.00.
