XLOOKUP

Lookup & Referenceintermediate

XLOOKUP is Excel's answer to VLOOKUP's limitations. It can look in any direction (left, right, up, down), doesn't require the lookup column to be first, has a built-in 'not found' argument (no IFERROR wrapper needed), and defaults to exact match. Available in Excel 365/2021 and Google Sheets.

Syntax

Excel:=XLOOKUP(lookup_value, lookup_array, return_array, [if_not_found], [match_mode], [search_mode])

Google Sheets: Same syntax

Parameters

lookup_valueThe value to search for.

lookup_arrayThe range to search in (single column or row).

return_arrayThe range to return from (single column or row).

if_not_found?Value to return if no match. Replaces the need for IFERROR.

match_mode?0 = exact (default), -1 = exact or next smaller, 1 = exact or next larger, 2 = wildcard.

search_mode?1 = first to last (default), -1 = last to first.

? = optional parameter

Worked Example

Find the amount for invoice INV-1005.

Result

$7,600.00

XLOOKUP searches A2 through A6 for 'INV-1005' and returns the matching value from C2 through C6. In this sample, that returns the amount $7,600.00 from row 4.
